Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a visit to a psychiatrist?

Psychiatrists diagnose mental health problems by asking questions about the symptoms of mood, thoughts and behaviour; as well about life experiences and stresses. We also often enquire about personal and social relationships to understand a person better.

We encourage people to be as open as possible, but if you prefer not to discuss a certain topic, please feel free to let us know. We understand there may be another better time or place.

Do I go into a consultation alone?

This is entirely up to you. Some people prefer the privacy of a session alone. For others, the presence of a close friend or family member may make them feel more comfortable. Sometimes, the other person can provide additional information for a fuller assessment.

What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, who diagnose and treat mental health problems. We view illnesses from a combination of biological, psychological and social perspectives. We may recommend laboratory or radiological investigations to make a complete assessment. We do spend a lot of the session talking and discussing the patient’s problems, and we are also able to prescribe medications as necessary.

Psychologists are not medical doctors and so do not focus on the biological aspects of an illness. They do not prescribe medication but are trained in various forms of therapy which treat mental health problems. Some psychologists are also able to administer formal psychometric tests (e.g. IQ tests, Dyslexia tests)
